LA KINGS & CHLA

MY DAY WITH A KING

Go Kings, go!

I directed a series of 6 spots for the LA Kings throughout two NHL seasons, featuring animated interviews with patients from the Children’s Hospital LA for in-game screenings at Crypto.com Arena.

LA Kings interviewed the kids about how they would spend a day with their favourite hockey players. I helped channel their unique perspectives to bring them to life in these animated interviews. The final products made their jumbo-screen appearances during LA Kings’ NHL playoff intermissions, with proceeds from the games benefiting CHLA.

The first three episodes ran during the 2022 playoffs. 2nd season ran throughout the season on games when CHLA and their patients were involved during intermissions.

All interviews were done through Skype, with a doctor from the hospital present. We later edited them to 45 seconds while still staying true to each patient’s story.

VISUAL DEVELOPMENT

The client requested that each spot suit the patient’s age group, varying from 6 to 15 years of age, and have an adult look for the fans during intermission screenings. We went with a simple comic book style and a limited color palette that works for both brands, as each kid is shown as the hero of their own stories.

LA Kings came back a few months later for the next season. We introduced dramatic lighting with a few adjustments while keeping the general design language the same.

Design process was more challenging on the 2nd season due to some of the initial players mentioned in the interviews got transferred to different clubs during production.
